The National Honor Society (NHS) is the nation's premier organization established to recognize outstanding high school students. More than just an honorroll, George Washington’s NHS serves to recognize those students who have demonstrated excellence in the areas of Scholarship, Leadership, Service, and Character. These characteristics have been associated with membership in the organization since its beginning in 1921.
Scholarship: GW students who are entering their junior or senior year of high school and have a weighted cumulative grade point average of 4.0 or higher, meet the scholarship requirement for membership. These students are then eligible for consideration on the basis of service, leadership, and character.
Service: This quality is defined through the voluntary contributions made by a student to both the school community and the community at large, done without compensation and with a positive, courteous, and enthusiastic spirit. Each member shall have the responsibility for choosing and participating in volunteer projects that reflect their particular talents and interests. This is in addition to the chapter projects to which all members contribute. Second year members must complete 18 hours per year (9 hours during the first semester and 9 hours during the second semester) and first year members must complete 15 hours (6 hours during the first semester and 9 hours during the second semester).
Leadership: Student leaders are those who are resourceful, good problem solvers, promoters of school activities, idea-contributors, dependable, and persons who exemplify positive attitudes about life. Leadership experiences can be drawn from school or community activities while working with or for others.
Character: The student of good character upholds principles of morality and ethics, is cooperative, demonstrates high standards of honesty and reliability, shows courtesy, concern, and respect for others, and generally maintains a good and clean lifestyle.
